you want to know why this bit is so powerful for me? because you can see, in that first gif, all of his pain. he has been through so much, he has lost everyone he ever cared about- mary, jess, john, madison, jo, ellen, cas- except his brother and bobby. and now bobby is in the next room, lying in a hospital bed, dying. and then sam thinks to himself “wait, what if this is another hallucination, what if this isn’t real?” so the boy with the demon blood squeezes his scar, the only thing that is keeping him anchored to reality. and what does he find?

this is isn’t a hallucination. this is real, and he’s about to lose someone else.

and his face in the last gifs says more than a thousand words ever could.

    …oh, now I’m tearing up.

Actually, when I was watching it, my thought was ‘Oh, shit, all this is happening and he’s got the spectre of Lucifer in his head, mocking him?’

Either way it’s a beautifully subtle way to show how much Sam is having to cope with, and how it’s affecting him every bit as badly as Dean.
